Presented the system of priority of urban buses that ACISA will implement in Corunna
Wednesday, February 3, 2010
On February 1st. was presented in Corunna the "Green Wave" project, which give right of way to buses at intersections with traffic lights in front of private vehicles, and whose implementation will perform ACISA in the months of August and September.
Tested in other cities of Spain and Europe, the system consists of the implantation in buses and semaphores of devices that will let the semaphores to improve or extend the time of green (depending on the case) in order to give way to the bus when this one comes closer, preserving at the same time, and in the possible measure, the existing strategy of regulation in each every crossing. Thus sudden changes are avoided in the signposting that can confuse to the driver, worsening of the conditions of traffic and undesirable situations of road insecurity.
With this device, the local government tries to prioritize the way of the urban buses in certain problematic crossings of the city to guarantee the frequency, to improve the speed and, consequently, the quality of the service offered to the citizen.
In case of that the semaphore is already in green when the bus approaches, the assignment of the devices will be to keep the semaphore in this condition enough time at the moment to order the bus to pass before it changes to red.
The results of the tests have been positive, since the buses save between 10 and 15 seconds for crossing. For the present time, only 25 % of the lines of Corunna will have the device "Green Wave", since they will be put into operation in the vehicles that cross the most troubled spots. Neither will be installed in the semaphores located in the sections that have rail bus, due to their good functioning.
The act was presided by the councillor of Mobility of the Town Council of Corunna, Yoya Neira, who compared the system with a "virtual rail - bus" and underlined the importance of using the public transport that today offers the municipality to connect with the different districts and neuralgic centers. Of this form, Corunna will turn into the first city of Galicia where this type of system works.
